Scene Safety
The first rule of rescue is your own safety. Learn to pause, scan for hazards, and protect yourself.

Decide if a scene is safe to approach.
Steps
- Stop and scan — Pause at a distance. Look for traffic, fire, water, or anything that hurt the person.
- Protect yourself — Only approach if it’s safe. Use gloves or a barrier when you can.
- Then help — Once it’s safe, check the person and call 911. An injured helper can’t help.
